Rich Farwell, owner of Los Osos Woodworking has been at it for a while. The Old Man (Rich Enjoying a day away from the shop.)

“Starting in Junior High, in the late ‘50s, I made my first project.” It was a saltbox: 3/8” solid wood, butt joints and a lid hinged using two small brads. It was a nice little shaker style box designed to hang from a nail on the wall. “But who knew from salt boxes? To me a salt box was round and said ‘When it Rains, it Pours’.”

After a very long hiatus that covered high school, work in photography, Vietnam, college, marriage to his sweetie Debbie, and the birth of their two children, Richard got back at it. After two years of working in a one car carport and doing craft shows, he got lucky and was accepted into the brand new Fine Woodworking program at College of the Redwoods in Ft Bragg, CA taught by the world famous James Krenov.

“Two years with Jim Krenov brought meaning to the comment by Donald Rumsfeld that ‘there are … unknown unknowns’. I thought I knew a lot and did good work, but the Fine Woodworking program really taught me how to achieve fine craftsmanship.”

It was three more years in the carport and working for others part time before Rich moved to a commercial space in 1987 where he’s owned and operated Los Osos Woodworking for over 20 years.

Shop work has cut a wide swath but the more notable works have included hand laid veneer tables, entertainment centers, unique armoire doors built for a friend that led to a complete kitchen for another client. In more recent years, the shop has been producing Frank Lloyd Wright designed lamps under agreement with Yamagiwa USA Corp, the license holder. George Lucas’ new Big Rock Ranch office complex in Marin, CA purchased over 150 lamps.

The Wright lamps have led to the development of the line of Craftsman Style lamps shown on this site. Using mostly Cherry, Lyptus, or Ash with exotic veneers, and hand painted silks, these lamps put out a lovely soft light designed to add an inviting ambiance to any room.
